JOB POSITION – HARVEST MANAGER

We are seeking a motivated individual to fill our Harvest Manager position. This person oversees the efficient operation of the field harvest and pack-out. This individual work closely with and is supervised by the farm owner. And is responsible for managing the Crew Leader and field crew on all things related to the harvest.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Do twice-weekly field walks to assess the crops and timing, quantity, and quality of harvest.
  • Make harvest list for farmers markets, wholesale orders, and the CSA.
  • Communicate harvest list with the field crew coordinator and field crew as needed.
  • Manage 15 Spanish-speaking employees and train new hires with harvest, washing, and packing.
  • Assist as needed with washing, sorting, and packing.
  • Make twice-weekly wholesale availability list with farmer.
  • Maintain inventory of packing supplies.
  • Maintain a clean, organized cooler and storage spaces.
  • Monitor quality of product and proper packaging and labeling.
  • Maintain cleaning logs and food safety procedures.
  • Assist in sales to retailers and restaurants.
  • Assist in training farmers market staff on crop information.
  • Attends weekly staff meetings and participates in both big picture strategizing and daily operational decisions.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Vending at one farmers market per week, which includes driving a box truck, customer service, detailed record-keeping, attention to detail, repetitive heavy lifting, and managing market staff.
  • Helping with truck packing and moving product between ranches as needed.
  • General farm work and participation in projects as needed.

The work requires the physical and mental capacity to contribute daily to an often rigorous, fast-paced, and deeply rewarding agricultural practice. Staff work 30-40 hours/week from January through March and 50+ hours/week from April through December.

Qualifications

  • Applicant needs to have a minimum of 2 years growing experience on a production farm.
  • The ability to speak conversational Spanish is required.
  • Proficiency with Excel and basic computer skills.
  • This position requires great attention to detail, familiarity with a broad spectrum of crops and appropriate harvest/wash/pack and food safety procedures.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Willing to make a two-year minimum commitment.

This person is trained by and reports to the farm owner and is assisted by one or two other tractor operators. We manage two ranches totaling 120 acres and farm vegetables on 50 of those. The land that is not in row crops is planted in pasture for sheep or cover cropped. Around the farm, we use 8 tractors for various purposes, ranging from 95hp to 20hp, many different primary and secondary cultivation implements, a forklift, trucks, and trailers.

Primary responsibilities

  • Planning and coordinating tractor field work with farm owner
  • Executing tractor work, including everything from field preparation and seeding to cultivating.
  • Fertility monitoring and application.
  • Scouting for pest and disease.
  • Coordinating and assisting irrigators on scheduling, pipe moving, drip installation, fertilizing, and repairs.
  • Maintenance of fencing, field tools, buildings, trucks, tractors, and equipment
  • Transporting tractors and equipment between two ranches.
  • Record-keeping of all field activity and inputs.
  • Responsible for supervising other tractor operators.
  • Attends weekly staff meetings and participates in both big picture strategizing and daily operational decisions.

CSA AND FARMERS MARKET MANAGER

We are seeking a motivated individual to fill our CSA and Farmers Market Manager position. This person is responsible for managing all administrative tasks related to our 350-400 member CSA. This person is also responsible for managing administrative tasks related to the 7-8 farmers markets that we participate in weekly. This individual works closely with the farm owner in the office and attends weekly staff meetings and participates in both big picture strategizing and daily operational decisions.

CSA responsibilities

  • Complete CSA administrative tasks including: sign-ups, payments, orders, and delivery logistics.
  • Handle all CSA member communication.
  • Manage CSA software.
  • Deciding box contents with Harvest Manager.
  • Ordering add-on products and additional produce for CSA boxes.
  • Format and develop content for weekly newsletter.
  • Perform outreach, tabling, and meetings as necessary.
  • Organizing Open Houses and farm events for CSA members.
  • Improve member retention and expand overall numbers.

Farmers Market responsibilities

  • Scheduling farmers market staff.
  • Hiring and training new farmers market staff.
  • Complete Farmers Market administrative tasks including: paperwork and tracking sales.
  • Order, maintain, and organize farmers market supplies.
  • Maintain and improve farmers market display material, set-up, and general systems.

  • Receiving orders and tracking availability.

  • Making and tracking invoices.
  • Writing and printing labels as needed.
  • Deciding appropriate pricing, packaging, and labeling.
  • General communication with retailers, restaurants, and wholesale accounts.
  • Oversee delivery logistics.
  • Coordinate product availability with Harvest Manager and CSA and Farmers Market Manager.
  • Improve annual sales and assist in crop planning to allow for growth.

Secondary responsibilities

  • Assist in performing outreach, tabling, and meetings as needed

JOB POSITION – FARMSTAND AND EVENTS COORDINATOR

We are seeking a motivated individual to fill our Farmstand, U-pick, and Events Manager position. Last year on a newly acquired ranch, we opened a small farmstand. This year we plan to launch a Strawberry and Pumpkin U-pick operation and offer open houses, farm tours, and farm dinners. This individual would be responsible for overseeing and coordinating the above mentioned projects, in addition to the responsibilities listed below.

Farmstand responsibilities

  • Maintain an abundant-looking, clean, and organized display.
  • Coordinate the opening set-up and closing down.
  • Communicate product needs to Harvest and Sales Managers.
  • Transport products from the main ranch to the farmstand as needed.
  • Follow food safety practices and procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of farmstand supplies.
  • Create and improve signage.
  • Staff on busy days and set-up honor system for slow days.
  • Assist in advertising and outreach.

U-Pick responsibilities

  • Staff on busy days (collecting money, answering questions, directing people and parking as necessary.)
  • Perform outreach and advertising.
  • Create signs and systems for a smooth and safe operation.

Events responsibilities

  • Plan and organize two Open House days for CSA members and farmers market customers.
  • Lead approximately 1-2 farm tours/month for both adults and children.

Secondary Responsibilities

JOB POSITION – FLOWER PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

The Flower Production Assistant works closely with the Flower Manager and a team of three flower team members to produce 3 acres of high quality, organic cut flowers for seven farmers markets, CSA, wholesale accounts, weddings and special events. The position is full time from April – November with 50-hour weeks at the height of the season, and tapering at the beginning and end of the season.

Flower-specific responsibilities include:

  • Harvest flowers up to 20-35 hours per week at the height of the season
  • Arrange flower bouquets
  • Trellis and stake beds, irrigate, fertilize, plant, and hoe as needed
  • Assist with greenhouse sowings and field plantings
  • Supervised by and works closely with Flower Manager

Job Position - Farmers Market Staff

We are always looking for additional marketeers to help out at our farmers markets. We attend seven markets throughout San Francisco, San Mateo County, and Santa Cruz.  We ask farmers market staff to meet our truck 2 hours before market, unload and create displays, then sell high quality veggies to our loyal customers. This is a really fun job for someone with fantastic customer service skills, positive attitude, and interest in local organic food. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Handle cash, make change, quick math without a calculator

• Keep detailed sales records

• Represent the farm to customers, other farms and market managers

• Unload truck and set up/tear down market stall alongside other staff

QUALIFICATIONS

• Positive attitude, outgoing personality and strong work ethic

• Great organizational skills and standard of cleanliness

• Reliable transportation to/from your market 

• Interest in organic farming and gardening practices a plus

• Retail experience, ideally in farmers markets or specialty grocery a plus
